Note that without using a "multiplexer" there should only be one transmitter going into a NMEA input. There are four wires - data going out of a device is transmitted on one pair and data is received along another pair, there is also a ground (earth) wire. To put this into simple English, each device on the NMEA network can transmit and/or receive data along twisted pairs of wires. For example, the GPRMC sentence contains Latitude, Longitude, Speed Over the Ground and Track direction. The NMEA 0183 standard defines the contents of each data sentence type, so that all listeners can read sentences accurately. Common values are 4,800 baud and 38,400 baud. The speed that data is transmitted is known as the Baud Rate and is the number of pulses per second. Through the use of "multiplexers", data from multiple devices can be combined into one data stream and fed into other devices.
#WHAT IS NMEA 2000 NETWORK SERIAL#
The NMEA 0183 standard uses a simple ASCII, serial communications protocol that defines how data is transmitted in a "sentence" from one "talker" to multiple "listeners" at a time. This is done to minimise data corruption from stray electrical noise.

One of the wires in each twisted pair carries a positive voltage signal and the other carries a negative voltage signal. Physically, the wiring is four wires made up of two twisted pairs - one pair for data output and one pair for data input. Interfacing to a computer is usually done via an RS232 to USB interface. The electrical standard is RS422, although most hardware with NMEA-0183 outputs are able to drive a single RS232 port. (It is slowly being phased out in favour of the newer NMEA 2000 standard, but this is not used on Alba.) NMEA 0183 is an electrical and data specification for communication between marine electronics such as echo sounder, autopilot, GPS receivers and many other types of instruments. The chart plotter and radar were bought in 2015 and are connected together using SeaTalk-HS.

The W2K-1 has the legendary Actisense “Reliability Built In” along with useful diagnostic LEDs, internal antenna, enhanced password security, full certification and all packaged in an extremely rugged IP67 case.Alba has electronic equipment that predominantly interfaces using SeaTalk 1 and NMEA 0183. Approximately 16 days of data can be stored on the pre-installed industrial grade micro SD card, which can be upgraded should the user require more storage. This is very useful for analysing race data, generating logbooks, diagnosing problems or even sharing your voyage details.

position, speed, course, wind speed, depth, engine data, AIS messages etc.) to be shared with NMEA 0183 compatible software applications running on connected devices.Īll the data received (or a selected subset) can be logged to its internal micro SD card for later downloading to use for analysing the voyage. It has built-in conversion of NMEA 2000 messages into NMEA 0183 sentences thus allowing a wide variety of vessel data (e.g. laptop, tablet or smartphone) connected to it via Wi-Fi. It transfers data from an NMEA 2000 backbone to any device (e.g. The W2K-1 is a compact and low-power NMEA 2000 to Wi-Fi Gateway with voyage data recording. The Actisense NMEA Reader software utility allows the NGW-1 user to view and understand (in detail) the translated NMEA 0183 sentences output by an NGW-1 directly.

#WHAT IS NMEA 2000 NETWORK PC#
NGW-1-USB is the NMEA 0183 USB (1.1 and 2.0) interface for bi-directional connection to a PC for use with NMEA 0183 software.Įvery option of the NGW-1 is available with the SeaTalkNG to NMEA 2000 adaptor Cable - STNG-A06045. This provides an 'out of the box' solution for quick installation with no configuration required. NGW-1-ISO-AIS is the NMEA 0183 AIS option that enables the conversion of NMEA 0183 AIS data to its equivalent in NMEA 2000. With an opto-isolated input and ISO-Drive output for direct NMEA 0183 device bi-directional connection. The NGW-1 is available to purchase in a variety of options: The NGW-1 can convert NMEA 0183 data into NMEA 2000 data and vice-versa. The Actisense NGW-1 NMEA 2000 Gateway is the easiest way to link between both old and new data networks.
